About Leigh

Where’s an intriguing life when you need it?

Leigh Evans lives in Southern Ontario with her husband and a short, fat, black dog.

This is generally where the author writes a whole bunch of interesting and exciting stuff about her life.

I’ve raised two kids, mothered three dogs, and herded a few cats. Other than that, my life has been fairly boring.

Consider me a work in progress.

Keep scrolling…I answer questions below.

F.A.Q’s about yours truly

1. Have you always written?

No. I wrote about that here: https://leighevans.wordpress.com/for-perspiring-authors/step-one/   That post is the first of many that charts my journey from the start of writing Hedi’s story to winning my agent, Deidre Knight, through the Speed-Dating-With-Deidre contest hosted on The Knight Agency blog.

2. Is Hedi’s Book of Rules your first novel?

Yes. With all the hell that implies.

3. Do you have plans for more?

You betcha. It’s getting crowded in my mind.

4. What advice can you give to budding authors?

Read. Write. Delete. Critique. Push. Re-write. Learn. Enjoy. And here’s the final one, which I only recently discovered: The scene that you don’t want to add to your book—because it will rip your heart out to live through it—is the one that must be written.

5. What’s a writer’s best tools?

The pink stuff for your stomach, determination, perseverance, and writer pals, who will threaten you with death and humiliation if you dare to give up. A mentor helps too:-)

6. Were you always so awesome?

Sorry to disappoint, but I was the kid with a learning disability in grade school and the wrong hem-length in high school. Let’s not even discuss college, where I discovered all the things that were cool and not so cool, and realized that I probably fell into the latter category. Truth be told, I doubt I’ll ever be awesome, but damn, I keep trying.

7. Is there a bottom line?

Yes. Never give up. Ever. Even bad things eventually turn around.

Congratulations on the sale, Leigh, from a fellow Canadian! What a ride. Way to go.

You wrote that book? Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m seeing it everywhere. I was wondering who wrote it yesterday. Then today I was scrolling down the list of PROs attending Nationals and there you were! It was weird. Of course, you’ll be leaving PROs soon. You must be so excited! I am for you.

    • Thank you so much, Carly. I’m not in a rush to go PAN. The PRO welcomed me this year, and I’d like a chance to meet up with some of the people. I don’t post much, but I do lurk, and have found a lot of inspiration and good advice on the PRO group’s forum. You’ve been seeing it everywhere? How very strange. And pleasurable:-)

  4. Hello Leigh –

I ran across your goodbye on the PRO loop and ended up here. I was in that same speed dating contest, and so I am absolutely thrilled that you and Deidre sold Hedi’s book! Congratulations! I’ll be sure to pick it up. I wish you all the best, and good luck on that next book.

    • Hey Alyssa – Oh, you’re so kind. Thank you. I’m working on the 2nd book today. I’m always delighted to meet other Speed-contest entrants. The stars were shining on me this time, perhaps next time will be your turn:-)

  5. Love your answers especially #4 – which is so very true for all authors. Creating our worlds and characters is the ‘easy’ part then comes the hard work! I wish you great success with your first published novel & know how exciting it is. If you have time take a glance at my writers group, who accepts local & virtual members – http://www.wfscsherwoodpark.com and also my publishers site – http://www.dreamwritepublishing.ca
Both are Canadian but certainly not limited to Canada! Members from around the globe & growing all the time (mostly because my motto as secretary is ‘global domination’ LOL)
    Happy writing
